Crafting the Soul of Southern Ocean Lodge
The rebirth of Southern Ocean Lodge on Kangaroo Island has been celebrated worldwide as a symbol of resilience and luxury. At the heart of this landmark project was RW Joiners, entrusted with delivering the complete internal fit-out of one of Australia's most iconic lodges.
The 12-month program demanded not only exceptional craftsmanship but also innovative problem-solving. The lodge’s signature curved architecture required RWJoiners to provide precise setting-out solutions, supplying builders with detailed curved radii and cutting files before frame construction began. This allowed joinery and construction to progress in tandem, ensuring precision across every element.
RWJoiners’ scope extended far beyond conventional joinery. The team supplied timber cladding, curved handrails, stonework, hallway flooring, wall cladding, timber stairs, skirtings, and bespoke curved banquette seating. Each piece was meticulously crafted from 700m³ of Tasmanian Blackwood and over 350 sheets of veneer, delivered via seven B-double trucks from Toowoomba to Kangaroo Island.
Key collaborators contributed to completing this extraordinary vision: Hagans Furniture polished every component to perfection, Allstone Solutions on the Gold Coast provided specialist stonework, and Clifton Upholstery completed all upholstery independently—a scope so extensive it required a semi-trailer on its own. Together, these partnerships ensured interiors of unmatched quality, blending precision joinery, polished finishes, and bespoke upholstery.
